Too late to get right

Jeremiah 19:11 And shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Even so will I break this people and this city, as one breaketh a potter’s vessel, that cannot be made whole again: and they shall bury them in Tophet, till there be no place to bury.

  1. God’s message through Jeremiah

  2. The message has to be what God says, any real preaching ought to be simply what God said Jeremiah 19:1 Thus saith the Lord,

  3. Jeremiah’s message would be very clear Jeremiah 19:1 Go and get a potter’s earthen bottle, and take of the ancients of the people, and of the ancients of the priests;

  4. It was another illustrated message, the potter’s pot

  5. There was nothing hidden or done in a corner

  6. He got the old grey heads, political leaders and spiritual leaders

  7. Even the site for the preaching was specifically chosen Jeremiah 19:2 And go forth unto the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is by the entry of the east gate, and proclaim there the words that I shall tell thee,

  8. The east gate was the gate where the broken pottery was thrown

  9. It overlooked the garbage dump

  10. This was near where they had worshipped idols, sacrificed their children

  11. Here they had worshipped false gods

  12. God promised the worst evil imaginable to happen to them Jeremiah 19:3 And say, Hear ye the word of the Lord, O kings of Judah, and inhabitants of Jerusalem; Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, the which whosoever heareth, his ears shall tingle.

  13. They had brought this evil on themselves

  14. They had forsaken the Lord Jeremiah 19:4 Because they have forsaken me,

  15. They had taken the holy and made it strange to God Jeremiah 19:4 and have estranged this place, and have burned incense in it unto other gods, whom neither they nor their fathers have known, nor the kings of Judah,

  16. They had sacrificed their children there Jeremiah 19:4 and have filled this place with the blood of innocents;

  17. They had built worship places for the demon Baal Jeremiah 19:5 They have built also the high places of Baal, to burn their sons with fire for burnt offerings unto Baal,

  18. God didn’t tell them to do it, He didn’t make them do it and actually He never even thought about it Jeremiah 19:5 which I commanded not, nor spake it, neither came it into my mind:

  19. Some would have you think that you are programmed to do wrong, even the sin you commit

  20. They would say that God caused or allowed or predestined even sin on the planet but this verse definitely contradicts that

  21. God was going to bring slaughter on His people Jeremiah 19:6 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that this place shall no more be called Tophet, nor The valley of the son of Hinnom, but The valley of slaughter.

  22. They have gone so far that God will not allow their best laid plans to work Jeremiah 19:7 And I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place; and

  23. They will be killed with swords Jeremiah 19:7 I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hands of them that seek their lives:

  24. They won’t even get a decent burial Jeremiah 19:7 and their carcases will I give to be meat for the fowls of the heaven, and for the beasts of the earth.

  25. The city will be shockingly alone as they suffer plagues Jeremiah 19:8 And I will make this city desolate, and an hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished and hiss because of all the plagues thereof.

  26. They will eat their own children and friends Jeremiah 19:9 And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend in the siege and straitness, wherewith their enemies, and they that seek their lives, shall straiten them.

  27. They have gone too far to come back now

  28. We saw the marred vessel get a second chance but now the message has changed

  29. Will you stay in your sin so long that the message changes?

  30. Will you not listen to even this passage of Scripture as a message from God

  31. Sin has drastic consequences so do not play with sin, do not stay in sin, do not excuse sin

  32. Jeremiah was to break the bottle in front of the men Jeremiah 19:10 Then shalt thou break the bottle in the sight of the men that go with thee,

  33. They have gone so far that they can’t be repaired Jeremiah 19:11 And shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Even so will I break this people and this city, as one breaketh a potter’s vessel, that cannot be made whole again: and they shall bury them in Tophet, till there be no place to bury.

  34. You can go so far and be so hard that there is no more hope for you

  35. God doesn’t always keep giving more opportunities

  36. Tophet here, refers to the place where they killed their children. The sound of the cries of their children had to be covered up by their beating on drums

  37. Jeremiah preaches his message again in the courts of the Lord’s house Jeremiah 19:14 Then came Jeremiah from Tophet, whither the Lord had sent him to prophesy; and he stood in the court of the Lord’s house; and said to all the people,

  38. This evil is not a threat, it will be happening Jeremiah 19:15 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring upon this city and upon all her towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it,

  39. The evil would be something they brought on themselves Jeremiah 19:15 because they have hardened their necks, that they might not hear my words.

  40. This message is hard to hear for anyone

  41. We want to believe that it is never too late

  42. But we know that God has often judged quickly

  43. Ananias and Sapphira

  44. The children of Israel when they refused to go into the promised land

  45. The Lord’s supper in I Corinthians 11

  46. If we stay too hard, too inflexible and refuse to hearken, to change then God will do whatever He needs to do

  47. Maybe the most important thing you need to remember is that you are not allowed to do what you want

  48. You do not belong to yourself but to Him and You will obey and be changed or chastised

  49. Act while there is still time

  50. Turn from your sin and rebellion

  51. Do not tempt God to cause you to live in the consequences of your sin

  1. Jeremiah’s message cost him

  2. When the leadership heard his message the man strikes Jeremiah and puts him in stocks Jeremiah 20:1 Now Pashur the son of Immer the priest, who was also chief governor in the house of the Lord, heard that Jeremiah prophesied these things. 2 Then Pashur smote Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the high gate of Benjamin, which was by the house of the Lord.

  3. Jeremiah responds harshly to Pashur Jeremiah 20:3 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Pashur brought forth Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then said Jeremiah unto him, The Lord hath not called thy name Pashur, but Magor-missabib.

  4. God would make Pashur a terror to himself and all his friends Jeremiah 20:4 For thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will make thee a terror to thyself, and to all thy friends: and

  5. He will watch his friends be killed with the sword Jeremiah 20:4 they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and thine eyes shall behold it: and

  6. God will send His people into the Babylonian captivity Jeremiah 20:4 I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall carry them captive into Babylon, and shall slay them with the sword.

  7. All the riches of God’s people would be plundered Jeremiah 20:5 Moreover I will deliver all the strength of this city, and all the labours thereof, and all the precious things thereof, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah will I give into the hand of their enemies, which shall spoil them, and take them, and carry them to Babylon.

  8. You, Pashur, will also go into captivity Jeremiah 20:6 And thou, Pashur, and all that dwell in thine house shall go into captivity: and thou shalt come to Babylon, and there thou shalt die, and shalt be buried there, thou, and all thy friends, to whom thou hast prophesied lies.

  9. Jeremiah’s message hurt him and caused him to suffer

  10. You and I should be faithful to God to do His will even if it causes us to suffer

  11. Would you give as much if you didn't get a tax advantage?

  12. Would you stand for Jesus if it meant losing your job?

  13. Would you share your faith even if it cost you, friends etc?

  14. What have you ever done for God that cost you?

  15. Do you really pay a price to be the man or woman of God?

  16. Do you border on prosperity gospel beliefs?

  17. The message caused hurt because it hurt people

  18. The truth hurts

  19. The truth costs

  20. The truth divides

  21. Are you willing to stand for Jesus even if it hurts in your family, your finances, or even your future

  22. The truth might just save your friends, coworkers, etc

  23. In what ways have you died to yourself, taken up a cross, hated your family?

  24. Jeremiah is discouraged because he had expected something else from the ministry

  25. God you didn’t tell me the whole truth about this ministry Jeremiah 20:7 O Lord, thou hast deceived me, and I was deceived: Thou art stronger than I, and hast prevailed: I am in derision daily, Every one mocketh me.

  26. I never expected your call to do so much to me

  27. Everyone is laughing at me

  28. You pushed me into this

  29. God the only message you give me is gloom and doom Jeremiah 20:8 For since I spake, I cried out, I cried violence and spoil; Because the word of the Lord was made a reproach unto me, And a derision, daily.

  30. Jeremiah was tired of being the preacher everyone hates

  31. He was tired of his messages from the Lord

  32. It got so He didn’t want to know what God had to say next

  33. Jeremiah got to a point where he just no longer wanted to preach Jeremiah 20:9 Then I said, I will not make mention of him, Nor speak any more in his name.

  34. But God was at work through His word in the heart of Jeremiah Jeremiah 20:9 But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, And I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.

  35. Jeremiah wanted to quit but he couldn’t

  36. The Word burned too hotly in his heart

  37. He tried but he simply couldn’t walk away from the ministry God had called him to do

  38. God’s men can get discouraged

  39. It is hard to deal with

  40. God’s men and the ministry often call for emotional toll on emotional men

  41. Though he wants to quit, he can’t

  42. You have had to deal with a lot but the Word has seized control of you

  43. You will have victory even in this as God’s Word works in and through you

  1. Jeremiah never seems to get his emotions under control

  2. God’s Word should have been enough but Jeremiah still hears the threats Jeremiah 20:10 For I heard the defaming of many, fear on every side. Report, say they, and we will report it. All my familiars watched for my halting, saying, Peradventure he will be enticed, and we shall prevail against him, And we shall take our revenge on him.

  3. The Word worked but then he seems to lose focus

  4. Everyone wants to hurt him

  5. They all talk badly about him

  6. But he knows that God is with him Jeremiah 20:11 But the Lord is with me as a mighty terrible one: Therefore my persecutors shall stumble, and they shall not prevail: They shall be greatly ashamed; for they shall not prosper: Their everlasting confusion shall never be forgotten.

  7. God is with Jeremiah and he knows it

  8. Jeremiah is excited again and wants God to punish them Jeremiah 20:12 But, O Lord of hosts, that triest the righteous, And seest the reins and the heart, Let me see thy vengeance on them: For unto thee have I opened my cause.

  9. God has delivered Jeremiah and he is happy Jeremiah 20:13 Sing unto the Lord, praise ye the Lord: For he hath delivered the soul of the poor from the hand of evildoers.

  10. Then it would seem that immediately Jeremiah is discouraged again

  11. I wish I had never been born Jeremiah 20:14 Cursed be the day wherein I was born: Let not the day wherein my mother bare me be blessed.

  12. I wish that no one had told my daddy I was born Jeremiah 20:15 Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying, A man child is born unto thee; Making him very glad.

  13. Jeremiah hoped that the man that announced his birth would suffer, slap the doctor who brought me into the world Jeremiah 20:16 And let that man be as the cities which the Lord overthrew, and repented not: And let him hear the cry in the morning, and the shouting at noontide;

  14. He should have killed me as soon as I was born Jeremiah 20:17 Because he slew me not from the womb; Or that my mother might have been my grave, And her womb to be always great with me.

  15. Why in the world was I born Jeremiah 20:18 Wherefore came I forth out of the womb To see labour and sorrow, That my days should be consumed with shame?

  16. Have you seen what Jeremiah does

  17. He wants to know why God put him in the ministry

  18. He wants out but the Word will not let him out

  19. Then he hears the threats but he thinks about the Lord

  20. Then he wishes he was never born

  21. He is a horrible roller coaster of emotion

  22. Do you deal with discouragement, doubt, fear, etc in your life and ministry?

  23. God is true

  24. Believe God and His character

  25. Focus your heart and mind on the Word of God and keep your thoughts under control

  26. Whether it is the message or the people you are to focus on the Lord

  27. Do not get to the point that you will be placed on a shelf and God will not use you
