The Sins of the Fathers visit their Children!
Genesis 26:1 And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar. 2 And the Lord appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of: 3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father; 4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; 5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws. 6 And Isaac dwelt in Gerar: 7 And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon. 8 And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife. 9 And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife: and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die for her. 10 And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us. 11 And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death. 12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the Lord blessed him. 13 And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great: 14 For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants: and the Philistines envied him. 15 For all the wells which his father’s servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth. 16 And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we.
17 And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there. 18 And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them. 19 And Isaac’s servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water. 20 And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaac’s herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him. 21 And they digged another well, and strove for that also: and he called the name of it Sitnah. 22 And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the Lord hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land. 23 And he went up from thence to Beer-sheba. 24 And the Lord appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham’s sake. 25 And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac’s servants digged a well. 26 Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol the chief captain of his army. 27 And Isaac said unto them, Wherefore come ye to me, seeing ye hate me, and have sent me away from you? 28 And they said, We saw certainly that the Lord was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath betwixt us, even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee; 29 That thou wilt do us no hurt, as we have not touched thee, and as we have done unto thee nothing but good, and have sent thee away in peace: thou art now the blessed of the Lord. 30 And he made them a feast, and they did eat and drink. 31 And they rose up betimes in the morning, and sware one to another: and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace. 32 And it came to pass the same day, that Isaac’s servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had digged, and said unto him, We have found water. 33 And he called it Shebah: therefore the name of the city is Beer-sheba unto this day. 34 And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite: 35 Which were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah.
This is the story of Isaac, the son of Abraham
Someone said: “Isaac is the ordinary son of a great father and the ordinary father of a great son”
Isaac lived 180 years, longer than both his dad and his son, Jacob
His life is filled with years that are not mentioned
He is only mentioned when we need to know about him in the context of someone else’s life
The most notable thing about his life is that he repeated the sins of his father
The lesson is for us as fathers. What we do, will have a great effect on our children
The lesson for children is do not make the mistakes of your dad but follow Jesus.
Remember you are responsible for your own life and can not blame your father

Our faith is always going to be tested whether by temptations that come from within us or trials around us James 1:2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. 12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. 13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: 14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. 15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. 16 Do not err, my beloved brethren.
Faith that can't be tested, can't be trusted
Often dad’s temptations become our temptations
The word Abraham is used 8 times and father 6 times in this chapter
What is so wrong with Egypt 2 And the Lord appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:
Egypt represents the world
Egypt is not the place of promise
Egypt is not the place of God’s blessing
You would think that Isaac would have learned something about Egypt from his dad but apparently not
Notice the promise reiterated Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father; 4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; 5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws. 6 And Isaac dwelt in Gerar:
God has promised this land to Abraham and now to Isaac
The question is, will they live in the light of the promise or in the light of the circumstances?
Isaac is tempted to run 26:1 And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar. 2 And the Lord appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:
This is exactly what Abraham did
He abandoned God’s place for him, the place of obedience
He ran to Egypt and set a bad example for his son
Isaac went to Abimelech the king of the Philistines
He was strongly warned not to go down to Egypt
We can never run from our problems or trial, God is using them to build us Romans 5:3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; 4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope:

Another sin that his dad committed twice
Once in Egypt
Another in the land of the Philistines
Real faith is living without scheming
Telling lies, is one of our favorite ways to protect ourselves and escape responsibility
God in His grace, protects Isaac and his wife Rebecca just like he had Abraham
God exposed the lie of this man Isaac-sporting with his wife
He protected him even though he didn't deserve it
He showed him grace to keep His word of a promise
How are we handling the temptations in our lives?
What we do, has a drastic effect on our children
They are watching us and learning from us
They will do what we do, not what we say
They see us through clearer eyes than we see ourselves
We judge our intentions
They judge our actions
We defend ourselves
They see us more like we are
Let’s try to leave a better example for our children

God blessed his efforts 12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the Lord blessed him. 13 And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great:
Why did God bless a deceiver, a liar?
Because is faithful even when we are not II Timothy 2:13 If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.
God blessed Isaac because of Abraham’s faith 26:5 just like He blesses us because of Jesus 5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.
The blessings brought conflict 14 For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants: and the Philistines envied him.
Each time, Abraham had stood up to people
Each time, Isaac simply retreats
We should try to live peaceably Romans 12:18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. 20 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. 21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. James 3:17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
God’s blessings on Isaac eventually caused the men to seek peace 28 And they said, We saw certainly that the Lord was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath betwixt us, even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee;
God eventually gave Isaac room 22 And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the Lord hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.
He built an altar 25 And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac’s servants digged a well.
God was with him 28 And they said, We saw certainly that the Lord was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath betwixt us, even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee; 29 That thou wilt do us no hurt, as we have not touched thee, and as we have done unto thee nothing but good, and have sent thee away in peace: thou art now the blessed of the Lord.
Esau has one son that seems to seek every way to hurt him 34 And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite: 35 Which were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah.
What decisions do you need to make based on these Scriptures?
Are you attempting to live an extraordinary life for the Lord Jesus?
Are you concerned about how your life, example, and testimony are affecting your children?
Have you determined to take responsibility for your own actions or continue to blame your parents?
Do you acknowledge that you are going to be tempted and tested? Are you ready to deal with it? Trusting the Lord to get you through it?
Do you run when tests come?
Do you lie when they come?
How do you deal with those that try to do you wrong?
Can people see God’s hand of blessing in your life?
Do you build altars regularly?
