How God gave us His Word

Jeremiah 30:1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying, 2 Thus speaketh the Lord God of Israel, saying, Write thee all the words that I have spoken unto thee in a book.

  1. Notice that God told Jeremiah to write His words in a book

  2. The words were from the Lord Jeremiah 36:1 And it came to pass in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, that this word came unto Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,

  3. The command to write was from God Jeremiah 36:2 Take thee a roll of a book, and write therein all the words that I have spoken unto thee against Israel, and against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day I spake unto thee, from the days of Josiah, even unto this day.

  4. God had spoken to Jeremiah

  5. Jeremiah dictated to Baruch Jeremiah 36:4 Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah: and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the Lord, which he had spoken unto him, upon a roll of a book. Jeremiah 36:17 And they asked Baruch, saying, Tell us now, How didst thou write all these words at his mouth? 18 Then Baruch answered them, He pronounced all these words unto me with his mouth, and I wrote them with ink in the book.

  6. This truth is clearly taught in other parts of the Scripture

  7. God’s will, not man’s to give us the Bible II Peter 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

  8. It was never the plan or design of men to write the Bible

  9. It was written by about 40 writers over 1500 or 1600 years spread across different continents

  10. They were holy men of God but the Word came as the Holy Spirit moved on men I Corinthians 2:13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

  11. It was the Holy Spirit speaking through another’s mouth Acts 1:16 Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.

  12. The Bible is the Word of God, not man II Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

  13. You can’t destroy the Word of God Matthew 24:35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

  14. The attempt was made Jeremiah 36:21 So the king sent Jehudi to fetch the roll: and he took it out of Elishama the scribe’s chamber. And Jehudi read it in the ears of the king, and in the ears of all the princes which stood beside the king. 22 Now the king sat in the winterhouse in the ninth month: and there was a fire on the hearth burning before him. 23 And it came to pass, that when Jehudi had read three or four leaves, he cut it with the penknife, and cast it into the fire that was on the hearth, until all the roll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth. 24 Yet they were not afraid, nor rent their garments, neither the king, nor any of his servants that heard all these words. 25 Nevertheless Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah had made intercession to the king that he would not burn the roll: but he would not hear them. 26 But the king commanded Jerahmeel the son of Hammelech, and Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel, to take Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet: but the Lord hid them.

  15. God preserved His Word Jeremiah 36:27 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, after that the king had burned the roll, and the words which Baruch wrote at the mouth of Jeremiah, saying, 28 Take thee again another roll, and write in it all the former words that were in the first roll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah hath burned.

  16. God would not allow a man to destroy His Word just because He didn’t like what it said Jeremiah 36:29 And thou shalt say to Jehoiakim king of Judah, Thus saith the Lord; Thou hast burned this roll, saying, Why hast thou written therein, saying, The king of Babylon shall certainly come and destroy this land, and shall cause to cease from thence man and beast?

  17. God promised to fulfill what He had said Jeremiah 36:31 And I will punish him and his seed and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring upon them, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the men of Judah, all the evil that I have pronounced against them; but they hearkened not.

  18. God gave more words to Jeremiah Jeremiah 36:32 Then took Jeremiah another roll, and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah; who wrote therein from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire: and there were added besides unto them many like words.

  19. Truths to remember:

  20. The Bible has been under attack all through history

  21. Men and women still take their penknives of unbelief and try to destroy the Word of God

  22. Others show no fear while their friends attack the Bible

  23. He has protected His Word for us John 10:35 If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;

  24. God will keep His Word Psalm 12:6 The words of the Lord are pure words: As silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. 7 Thou shalt keep them, O Lord, Thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever. Proverbs 30:5 Every word of God is pure: He is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. 6 Add thou not unto his words, Lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.

  25. The Word of God is perfect, infallible Psalm 19:7 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.

  26. The Word of God has already been tested and tried Psalm 18:30 As for God, his way is perfect: The word of the Lord is tried: He is a buckler to all those that trust in him.

  27. He takes care of the smallest marking of the language Matthew 5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

  28. The Bible, Word of God, stands forever Isaiah 40:8 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: But the word of our God shall stand for ever.

  29. His Word is very pure Psalm 119:140 Thy word is very pure: Therefore thy servant loveth it.

  30. The Word endures forever Psalm 119:160 Thy word is true from the beginning: And every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.

  31. No need to worry, it is forever there so that when the king cuts it up, God just gives it again Psalm 119:89 For ever, O Lord, Thy word is settled in heaven.

  32. The attitude we should have as we approach the Scriptures:

  33. Know that it is the very Word of God I Thessalonians 2:13 For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe. Colossians 1:29 Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.

  34. Don’t be dull of hearing Hebrews 5:11 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.

  35. You should reverence the Bible, the Word of God Acts 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

  36. You reverence it by reading, memorizing, and obeying it

  37. You reverence it by your attitude towards it, you know it is the Word of God and you know it is powerful Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

  38. No questions, no doubts, just accept and move forward

  39. We should delight in the Word of God Psalm 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; And in his law doth he meditate day and night.

  40. We should believe the Word of God Hebrews 4:2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

  41. If you will not believe what is written, you wouldn’t believe Jesus if He talked directly to you John 5:46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. 47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

  42. God doesn’t lie Titus 1:2 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; Hebrews 6:18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

  43. We live by the Word of God Deuteronomy 8:3 And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live.
