A Godly Family Heritage

Genesis 4:25 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. 26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the Lord. 5:1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; 2 Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created. 3 And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth: 4 And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters: 5 And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died. 6 And Seth lived an hundred and five years, and begat Enos: 7 And Seth lived after he begat Enos eight hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters: 8 And all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years: and he died. 9 And Enos lived ninety years, and begat Cainan: 10 And Enos lived after he begat Cainan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters: 11 And all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years: and he died. 12 And Cainan lived seventy years, and begat Mahalaleel: 13 And Cainan lived after he begat Mahalaleel eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters: 14 And all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years: and he died. 15 And Mahalaleel lived sixty and five years, and begat Jared: 16 And Mahalaleel lived after he begat Jared eight hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters: 17 And all the days of Mahalaleel were eight hundred ninety and five years: and he died. 18 And Jared lived an hundred sixty and two years, and he begat Enoch: 19 And Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: 20 And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died. 21 And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah: 22 And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: 23 And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: 24 And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him. 25 And Methuselah lived an hundred eighty and seven years, and begat Lamech: 26 And Methuselah lived after he begat Lamech seven hundred eighty and two years, and begat sons and daughters: 27 And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years: and he died. 28 And Lamech lived an hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son: 29 And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the Lord hath cursed. 30 And Lamech lived after he begat Noah five hundred ninety and five years, and begat sons and daughters: 31 And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy and seven years: and he died. 32 And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
Two distinct families, Cain, fleeing from the presence of God, and Seth, seeking God
Cain has gone from the presence of God
They develop an advanced culture
There is cruelty, there as one boasts about murder
Seth has a line of children showing a definite interest in the things of God
Seth has two children mentioned in Hebrews 11
Enoch Hebrews 11:5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.
Noah Hebrews 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
This was the promise in Genesis 3:15, two seeds at war And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
The enmity between the serpent and the woman
The seed (offspring-descendants) of the serpent versus the seed (offspring-descendants) of the woman
Ultimately the conflict is between Satan and Jesus
Illustrated in Cain killing Abel over worship. Abel had brought his offering by faith Hebrews 11:4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.
Illustrated in Cain starting a family that flees from the presence of God while Seth’s family seeks God
What sort of heritage are you leaving your family?
Do you flee from the presence of God?
Is a discussion of God, Jesus, the Bible, right and wrong a part of your normal conversation?
If they follow your example will they see the things of God as more important or material things?
If they have to sum up who you are and what you do, how high would Jesus rank you in their list?
God gives Eve another seed Genesis 4:25 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.
Another opportunity, a new beginning!
The hope was that God’s promised Redeemer, Deliverer would be born
Abel had been killed by his brother
Cain has gone off from God and started a city and a new line of people who are far from God
Now Seth is born and they hope he is the appointed seed Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Even though Abel had died and Enoch had become a murderer they still believed God and looked for Him to answer
Do you know the promises of God? Do you look to see Him make them real in your life?
How do you deal with setbacks, things going wrong that might make you think that God hasn’t come through
Men began to call on the Lord 26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the Lord.
Abel had been killed. Cain had gone off in his own way. Now Seth has a son and something changes. Men begin to pray
There was a call back to God, revival
Apparently, men had lost interest. Maybe Cain seemed to be doing well even though he had completely disobeyed God
The offerings had brought death
But now men call on God and life will be preserved for several hundred years more
Two great men will come from the family, one will walk with God and not die, Enoch. The other will be used to save humanity in an ark, Noah
What would be the testimony of your life? Do you call others to call on God? Would your children know that you seek God?
Adam has a son in his own image 3 And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth:
Hard to know exactly what this means
We know that death is passed on to his son as well as sin
We know that Adam had learned to call on God and it appears that Seth and his family did as well
Obviously, men pass on to their children much of what they are
Have you considered what you are passing on?
Have you considered how your children will be if they are after your image?
Not all of your children will always do what you want-Adam had two principal sons, one followed God and the other was a murderer
Adam had many sons and daughters 4 And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters:
Never forget that the most important thing that you have is how you pass down your faith. The majority of the people mentioned in this chapter only were born, had children, and died but the influence on their children was enormous
Not much will be remembered about you but what you invest in your children
Notice death has become a part of life
They live, have children, and die
Death as a result of sin has become a normal part of the process Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: 13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. 15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. 16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification. 17 For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) 21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
Those that were meant to live forever now die
We were not designed for death, there was a tree of life in the garden
Sin and rebellion brought death. Obedience will now bring life. The hard part about obeying is that we simply believe and trust, not do!
They lived, had a family, and died. What will you do with the short time God gives you here on this planet? Will you get caught up in the things that don't matter and don't last?
A baby’s birth made the difference between defeat and victory
It would appear that when Enoch was born, something changed 26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the Lord.
Amazingly the birth of a child can call for definite changes in our lives
In the Bible story, we see many changes when a child is born as with Moses coming to deliver Israel from Egypt Exodus 2:1-10
Or Samuel being born, who will judge Israel after a time when God’s Word had been very scared I Samuel 1-3
Or the greatest birth and change when Jesus was born on the road to Calvary
You should realize that your children are a heritage of the Lord. They belong to Him. He has a purpose for their life. You should raise them to honor and serve God. You never know just who God has given you in your baby
God took care to know people
Did you notice that God named all of those people?
I would have left them out but not God. He notices you!
He noticed a man living a holy life in a horrible time-Enoch
Do you realize that we have no excuse for not loving God and serving Him in these trying times?
Though Seth had started a godly line by the end of this chapter there is hardly anyone left. They have all gone the way of Cain. There will only be 8 in the ark
What will you have gained if you make a good life here for you and your children and they lose it all in Hell afterward
Pass on your faith! Let the most important thing in your life be your service to God
It is a big mistake that education, money, jobs, entertainment, and sports are more important to you than serving God. You are communicating great truths to your children. Is that what you want them to see in you and then practice in their lives?
You are the head of a new family, a new line, a new way of thinking and living. How will you handle it?
